The Joy of Writing
Program
The Joy of Writing Program is Correctbook’s educational approach to increasing writing practice in classrooms where learning materials are scarce.
By combining reusable writing tools with simple classroom methods, the program helps children practice writing more often, participate actively in lessons, and learn in a safe environment where making mistakes is part of the learning process. The program is designed for schools, NGOs, and education partners who want to strengthen literacy and learning through daily writing practice.
Writing is one of the most effective ways to learn. It helps children process information more deeply, strengthen memory, and develop critical thinking and language skills.
Yet in many parts of the world, children have limited access to writing materials. When notebooks are scarce, writing opportunities become limited. They may hesitate to make mistakes because every page matters.
As a result, children practice less and learning slows down.
According to UNESCO and the World Bank, more than half of ten-year-olds in low and middle income countries cannot read and understand a simple text.
The Joy of Writing Program addresses this challenge by making writing accessible, repeatable, and engaging.
Reusable Writing Materials
Each student receives a Correctbook writing set consisting of a reusable notebook, a pen, a wipe, and refills.
The notebook allows students to:
- Practice writing again and again
- Erase mistakes and try again
- Use the book for exercises, rough work, and revision
- Continue learning even when traditional notebooks run out
Correctbook notebooks are durable and designed for repeated use over multiple years. In Africa, Correctbook collaborates with local production partners to create writing materials that align with local curricula and classroom needs.
These locally produced versions are designed with affordability in mind, making it easier for schools and education partners to scale writing practice programs while supporting local production ecosystems.
Teacher Orientation and Support
classroom and how to maintain the materials, so they last as long as possible.
During this onboarding, teachers learn how to:
- Use the correct writing pressure to protect the reusable pages
- Clean the pages properly using the cloth
- Store notebooks and pens safely between lessons
- Manage pen refills
At the same time, teachers learn how to integrate Correctbooks into their daily teaching practice.
The onboarding encourages:
- Short writing exercises during lessons
- Frequent revision and self-correction
- Group writing and peer learning
- Creative expression and experimentation
The Joy of Writing approach does not replace the existing curriculum, and the onboarding does not increase teachers’ workload. Instead, it strengthens classroom learning by increasing opportunities for students to write, practice, and improve.

Monitoring and Evaluation
To understand the impact of the program, schools and partners monitor how Correctbooks are used in the classroom.
This helps identify improvements in:
- Writing practice and revision
- Student participation
- Teacher experience in the classroom
- Learning engagement
These insights support continuous improvement and responsible scaling of the program.
Proven Impact in Classrooms
Early research and field evaluations show strong results.
- 85% of teachers reported improvements in student participation, handwriting, and creativity.
- Reusable notebooks encouraged daily revision and self-correction. Before the program, around 60% of students rarely revised their work, while 85% reported revising daily after the introduction of Correctbook.
- At one participating school, the head teacher observed that classes using Correctbook outperformed other classes in end-of-term results.
- Intervention classes showed higher school attendance, with one of the four schools reporting 100% attendance since the introduction of Correctbook.
- 78% of teachers reported reduced preparation time and increased confidence in their teaching.
These findings show how increasing writing opportunities can significantly improve the classroom experience for both students and teachers.
A Program Designed for Scale
The Joy of Writing Program is designed to work in different educational environments and can be implemented through partnerships with NGOs, schools, and education initiatives.
- The model is simple and scalable.
- Reusable materials reduce long term costs.
- Teachers can integrate the method without additional workload.
- Partners can adapt the program to local education systems.
Because the materials are reusable, each Correctbook can support learning for multiple years.
More than 730,000 children have already gained access to Correctbook writing materials for a full year of learning.
Through partnerships with schools and NGOs, the Joy of Writing Program continues to expand to new regions and classrooms.
The Joy of Writing Program can be implemented by:
- Schools
- NGOs and education organisations
- Government education initiatives
- Foundations and donors supporting literacy programs

Laaggeletterdheid in Nederland
