correctbook kenya training

In June 2025, Correctbook Africa launched a project at seven primary schools in East Kenya, together with partners ECDP and Welthungerhilfe. The goal? To explore how erasable writing materials can support writing education – as a complement to traditional school supplies.

We handed out Correctbooks, trained teachers, and observed writing lessons in the classroom. By speaking with schools and parents, we gain insights into what really works. And we hope to give students more consistent opportunities to practise their writing.
Step by step, we're working towards our mission: to make writing fun again.

This blog shares more about the project and our first findings.

Quick summary

Correctbook Africa visited 7 primary schools in East Kenya.

Together with partners, we explored how writing education can be improved.

Many children have no writing materials or have to share.

5,000 Correctbooks have now been distributed.

Teachers and students are excited to try erasable writing.

Stronger together in Kenya

This project was set up to investigate the impact of erasable school materials alongside traditional tools. Correctbook Africa works closely with local organisations and the government. As part of the research, we distributed 5,000 Correctbooks to children in Machakos, Kitui and Makueni, across seven schools.

We also trained at least two teachers per school, so they could show their colleagues how to use Correctbook effectively in class. Even the Ministry of Education joined in: their staff received a special awareness training.

What we learned from the research

The study was conducted by Professor Owuor Olungah from the University of Nairobi. From interviews and classroom observations, several key insights emerged:

A lack of school supplies
Many students don’t have enough notebooks. Schools have limited access to materials and receive too little support from the government – forcing parents to step in.

Pressure on parents
In 89% of cases, parents must buy writing materials themselves. On average, they spend between 500 and 2,000 Kenyan shillings per term – a significant burden.

Teachers and students are excited about Correctbook
They immediately see the benefits of erasable writing: it’s sustainable, cost-effective, and reduces waste.

A boost for writing education
Teachers give daily writing assignments, but material shortages leave little room for practice or revision. With Correctbook, students can practise endlessly without needing new paper each time.

Key figures from the research

24% of students are currently performing below average

58% of students lack sufficient school materials

82% of teachers and students are enthusiastic about Correctbook from the start

And this is just the beginning!

The first 5,000 Correctbooks were distributed in late May. Our local partners continue to monitor how things progress. Both teachers and students are enthusiastic and well-prepared to actively use Correctbooks in the classroom.

In the coming months, we’ll continue learning. We'll revisit the same schools to measure the effect on writing skills, motivation, and student engagement. Step by step, we're building towards lasting improvements in education.

You make the difference

Worldwide, over 250 million children still struggle to read and write. One of the main reasons? A lack of writing materials. With every Correctbook you buy, you help change that. For every book sold, we donate the same erasable writing tools to children in under-resourced areas.

Together, we make writing fun again!
